Carpe Leo's Movie Reviews
Rating System:
Grrrrr = Bad, like losing an exhausting kill to pack of Hyenas!
Meow = OK, like it was fairly entertaining when I wasn't napping.
Purrrr = Good, like rolling around in a mud pool on a hot African day.
Roar = Excellent, like finding out four more females are joining the pride!
The writer of The Faculty is the same one that brought us Scream (1 and 2) and the same fashion of self parody, only this time it's the "Body Snatchers" type of flick than a mad slasher type. Not only do these films parody themselves and their genre, they also seem to make the statement that there is nothing original left in Hollywood. Now setting our Leo cynicism aside, the film was a hip and cool version of The Puppet Masters as an alien race try's to take over a school in Ohio, maybe this would be an improvement. All the standard stereotypes are present and move right along to a pretty cool sound track that features an interesting remake of Pink Floyd's "The Wall".
There was some "faculty" of a Purrrr here.
It's like, the animated (and musical) version of the Ten Commandments. The musical numbers kind of distract from the drama of the biblical (though slightly altered for artistic license) story. The animation is first rate which makes the parting of the Red Sea an almost breath taking thing to behold, far surpassing the classic Heston movie.
We lion's being fairly regal simply must give a "prince" a Roar.
It's Caffeine Free Star Trek! The 9th movie in the Star Trek universe is indeed light and fluffy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, except it is light in the action and intensity. All our Next Generation favorites are back and looking good with the new, sleek and supped up, model of the Enterprise. The rest of the special effects are still top notch, but the overall feel of the show is reminiscent of Trek IV " The Voyage Home", you know, the one with the whales. That one was "trek light" also.
The mission is still to Roar where no man has gone before.
PS. I made the above animation my self, neat huh?
"Psycho" - You just can't improve on perfection, so Meow.
"A Bug's Life"- We lions usually find bugs annoying but we'll Roar for these!
"Enemy of the State"- Will Smith is still "Fresh" in this fairly good thriller. Just Purrrr Baby!
"Meet Joe Black"- Too long, too slow, but Clair steels the show, Meeeow!
"The Siege" - Bruce Willis and the climax are the weak links in this otherwise Purrrr ty good thriller.
"The Waterboy" - Not quite as funny as "Happy Gilmore" but keep me Purrrring throughout it.
Oscar Watch:
The Academy Awards are still months away but I have some early thoughts on it. I've accurately picked the best picture for the last 10 years and run about 89% for the rest of the major categories.
The early money is easily on "Saving Private Ryan". It should, at the very least , gain nominations for Best Pic, Tom Hanks will probably get his fourth nod at Best Actor and a shot at winning number 3. Steven Spielberg has his best shot at one since directing "Shindler's List" and deserved a few more from the past.
Don't be surprised if "Ace Ventura" himself gives Hanks a run for his money. That's right, Jim Carrey is for real and showed it in "Truman".
Were just coming into the best part of the year for Oscar contenders, so it should get interesting from now till New Years. Keep checking here for more, especially after the nominations in February.
Back to Main Page or go back to Relax "DEN".
